Camera Red
What do colored camera filters do? ie: red camera filter, does it take out the red or add more red in?
Hi, I was just wondering about the colored camera filters like: red, yellow, blue, etc. I’m not really sure what they do and how they are used. Thanks for any advise.
All filters, whether they are optical, electrical or mechanical (the filters in coffee makers, the screens in a sink drain) are subtractive. They can’t add anything.
Color filters in B&W photography are used to control how tonal ranges are rendered. They let through light that is similar in color to the filter and block, or let through, less light in the other colors. The max effect is where the color is ‘opposite’ to the filter color, e.g., blue goes black with a strong red filter. They come in various strengths to provide control over the effects.
Colored filters for color work are basically used to convert the spectrum of light to more (or less) match the requirements of film. The blues are blocked for filters that allow you to use tungsten (indoor) balanced film in daylight, and vice versa. There are also warming filters, coolling filters and other special effects filters whose purpose is aesthetic control.
With digital, the need for many of these filters is eliminated or reduced since you can adjust the camera for the type of response you want, or do the adjustments in post processing with more control and precision.
My total filter kit consists of 3 Neutral Density (ND) filters, 2 Graduated ND filters and a Polarizing filter. Of those, the polarizer gets the most use, followed by the ND filters to control exposure times and then the Graduated ND filters (rarely used). I still have a film camera, though I haven’t used it in a long time, and with the ability to scan slides or negatives in and post process them digitally, I still don’t need the other filters.
